Scotch Bonnet Mag is a digital food culture and comedy magazine. We see food writing like how a fusion restaurant hopes you interpret its brand-new spin on cultural classics.

Our work is experimental. From multi-directional critiques on gentrification through oxtail and pepper sauce to graphs that illustrate the best meal to eat while talking shit with friends, we’re punchy, dreamy, and personal. What does this plate of pomelo salad mean to you at this specific point in time? The crunchiness against your teeth, the acid on your tongue, and the heat at the back of your throat? How do those textures and feelings relate to your morning commute? Where does your mind wander when you see these colors? A plate of food is a collection of visions from the chef to the diner. An art piece that drives culture into your mouth.

Khadjiah Johnson is a multi-disciplinary writer and performer from New York City. She’s the founder and host of the genre-bending indie food column, Scotch Bonnet, and is a contributing writer for Food Network and Black Nerd Problems. She’s performed for audiences over 15K on internationally known stages like Madison Square Garden, Allstate Arena, Apollo Theater, Lincoln Center, and many more. Khadjiah’s work has appeared in Vulture, Epicurious, Crunchyroll, The Best American Food Writing 2023, The Offing, Emmy-award-winning Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO), and more. When she’s not writing or performing, you can catch Khadjiah cooking and playing video games or, on a bad day, shaking her fist at under-seasoned chicken.
